An allergy is when your immune system overreacts to a normally harmless substance, such as dust mites, pollen or a food. The reaction is driven by IgE antibodies and can cause sneezing, a blocked or runny nose, itchy or watery eyes, hives, or flare-ups of eczema.
Allergies are common here, partly because of our warm, humid climate. House dust mites are the most common trigger, linked to up to 80 percent of allergic symptoms and affecting most people with asthma. [1] Allergic rhinitis, or nasal allergy, affects about 1 in 4 people in Singapore, and around 1 in 3 get symptoms such as morning sniffles and congestion. [2] Food allergies affect about 5 percent of children under 12, with egg, milk, peanut and shellfish among the most common. [3] Other local triggers include pet dander, mould and tropical pollen.
The screen measures allergen-specific IgE antibodies from a single blood sample, across 59 common allergens at once. They are grouped into environmental and inhaled allergens, such as dust mites, pet dander, pollen and moulds, and foods, such as egg, milk, peanut, shellfish and wheat. Your report shows which allergens you react to and how strongly.
A raised result means you are sensitive to that allergen. Whether it is a true allergy that needs action depends on your symptoms, so your doctor reviews your results alongside your history to confirm your triggers and advise how to manage them.
Allergy testing can be done by a blood test or a skin-prick test. A blood test needs only one draw, can be done even if you are on antihistamines, and is often easier for young children or people with eczema or easily reactive skin. Your doctor can advise which suits you.
