Recording Your Blood Pressure

Readings taken at home tell us more than a single reading in clinic — as long as they are taken the same way each time. Here is how, plus a log to fill in and bring to your review.

The short version
01Sit quietly for five minutes first.
02Cuff on a bare upper arm, level with your heart.
03Two readings, a minute apart. Write both down.
04Morning and evening, for seven days.
Before you measure

Give Yourself Thirty Quiet Minutes

Most odd readings come from what happened just before the cuff went on.

Wait 30 Minutes

After coffee, tea, a cigarette, alcohol or exercise. All of them push the reading up.

Empty Your Bladder

A full bladder can add several points to the reading.

Sit Still for Five Minutes

Back supported, feet flat on the floor, legs uncrossed. No phone, no talking.

Use the Same Arm

Whichever arm we measured in clinic — usually the one that reads higher.

Taking the reading

Six Steps, Same Way Every Time

1
Bare Arm, Cuff at Heart Level

Roll the sleeve up rather than measuring over clothing. Rest your arm on a table so the cuff sits level with your heart.

2
Check the Cuff Fits

Snug enough for two fingers underneath, with the lower edge about 2 cm above your elbow crease. A cuff that is too small reads high.

3
Stay Quiet While It Inflates

Don't talk or move. Talking during a reading can add up to 10 points.

4
Take Two Readings

Wait a minute between them. Record both — don't pick the nicer one.

5
Write It Down Straight Away

Both numbers, the pulse if your machine shows it, and the time. Use the log on this page, or the machine's memory if it has one.

6
Morning and Evening, Seven Days

Morning before breakfast and before your medication; evening before bed. Keep to roughly the same times each day.

Reading the numbers

What the Two Numbers Mean

Blood pressure is written as one number over the other, in mmHg — for example 128/78.

The Top Number — Systolic

The pressure while your heart is pumping. It is the number that usually rises with age and with salt, stress and weight.

The Bottom Number — Diastolic

The pressure while your heart rests between beats. In younger adults this is often the one we watch.

Track on your phone

Your Diary, In Your Pocket

If you'd rather not keep paper, use the BP Diary instead. It asks for one morning and one evening reading every other day, shows you the trend as it builds, and sends us a password-protected report when you're done.

Open the BP diary
Week by Week Recordings

Whichever period we asked you for, morning and evening on alternate days.

Stays on Your Phone

Nothing reaches us until you tap send, and the report is password-protected.

Add It to Your Home Screen

It then opens like an app and works without a connection.

Take two readings a minute apart at each sitting and write down both — use the notes column for the second one, or for anything unusual that day (poor sleep, missed medication, feeling unwell).
Keep Your Readings in the BP Diary

Add it to your home screen and it opens like an app — it prompts you for each reading, shows the trend, and sends us the report when you're done.

Send Us Your Week

Photograph the finished log and WhatsApp it over, or bring it to your review — whichever is easier.

Please read. This is general guidance for patients of New Path Medical & Aesthetics, not a diagnosis or a change to your treatment. Do not start, stop or adjust any medication based on your home readings — speak to us first. If you feel unwell, seek care rather than waiting for the next reading.
