What is Botox®/Dysport®?
Botox® & Dysport® are popular brands of Botulinum toxin injections.
Botulinum toxin, produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum, is injected to weaken specific muscle groups through a neuro-chemical process whereby nerve activity supplying these muscles are suppressed, causing localised muscle relaxation. Once the muscle group is weakened, dynamic wrinkles and expression lines are minimised.
What does it treat?
Hyperhidrosis (Excessive Sweating)
Recurrent Headaches / Migraines
Bruxism (Teeth Grinding) & Tight Jaw
How It's Done
The area of injection is first prepped by cleaning with antiseptic solution to reduce risk of infection. For facial injections, a local anaesthetic cream may be applied to numb the area and further reduce pain during the injections. The toxin is then injected into the muscle directly. Multiple injections may be required depending on the area and condition being treated for.
The effect of the toxin is temporary. It can last up to a maximum of 6 months. To maintain the desired effect, regular injections should be done every 4 to 6 months. In general, these injections tend to be more effective if regularly repeated over a longer period of time.
Frequently Asked Questions
The procedure takes roughly 30 to 45 mins to be completed.
There is minimal pain and discomfort for facial injections as numbing cream will be applied to the injection areas generously 30 mins prior to the procedure.
There is little to no downtime after botulinum toxin injections.
There are a few things to take note of after your botulinum toxin injections
1) Stay upright for at least 4 hours (do not go to sleep immediately afterwards) and try not to rub/massage the areas. This is to prevent the botulinum toxin from moving to unwanted areas.
2) No alcohol 24 hours after the injections as this may increase risk of bruising at the injection sites.
3) Avoid vigorous/cardio exercise for 24 hours after the injections to prevent blood circulation from moving the toxin about.
