A chemical peel is a procedure performed by trained medical personnel. It involves applying a chemical solution onto the skin to remove the top layer of skin cells (epidermis). This removes dead skin cells, unclogs pores and promotes skin rejuvenation so that recurrence and severity of acne is reduced.

A strong concentration of glycolic acid, an alpha-hydroxy-acid (AHA), is used to perform this procedure. The acid is applied to the skin in layers after the skin is prepared. The number of layers applied depend on the severity of the condition.

The EdgeOne CO2 laser is an ablative laser that works by removing the outer layers of the skin and heating the underlying layer to stimulate growth of collagen fibres. This allows the new skin to regenerate, with a tighter and smoother appearance.

Perfect for acne and acne scarring, the CO2 laser controls active acne by reducing anti-inflammation with maintenance treatments. Once the acne condition has stabilised, it is then used to manage acne scarring and pigmented spots. 

In more severe cases of nodular/cystic acne that has not responded to other treatments, isotretinoin may be prescribed to manage the skin condition. Isotretinoin improves acne by reducing inflammation of the skin and reducing sebum produced by the glands in the skin.

Visible improvement to the skin can be noticed in the first 1-2 months of starting isotretinoin. Although in some cases, it is possible for the skin condition to worsen before it starts to improve. 

Blood tests will have to be done prior to starting isotretinoin and during the course of the treatment to monitor for your cholesterol levels and liver enzymes. This is done for safety purposes to ensure that the medication does not have any adverse reaction on the liver and cholesterol levels. 

Common side effects may include dry skin and chapped lips which can be managed with a lightweight moisturiser. Mild muscle and joint aches may occur as well.
